Framing the Face The center of interest in a pet portrait is almost always the face, so it’s a good idea to use elements of the background to “frame” the face. For example, in this photo, the foliage cups the face with a U shape.

Step 1 First I use the grid method (see pages 16–17) to transfer the outlines of the Shih Tzu onto my drawing paper. I include all the major lines, describing the direction of hair growth and delineating some of the long leaves on the left. Using an HB pencil, I sketch only the foliage that directly affects the Shih Tzu, as my priority at this stage is to define the dog. I always avoid excessive erasing as I want my final drawing to have a clean look, so it’s important that I make any adjustments to the line drawing now.
